Family Time, Winter

Winter Fun Day {a fun Cub Scouts activity}

Yesterday the kids and I took part in Winter Fun Day with James’ Cub Scouts. He missed it last year because he was sick. So he was looking forward to this morning of outside activities. Rhianna came too. I love that siblings are always welcome at the Cub Scouts’ activities.

Getting ready for the slingshot activity …

Well, the kids were looking forward to the morning until they got there. Lol They pouted for the first 45 minutes — they were cold; they were bored; they wanted to go home. Oh, boy. The weather forecast promised a warm-up for Saturday — temperatures into the low forties. And lots of snowmelt, with peeks of sun from behind the clouds. This sounded good to me! It sure beat the sub-freezing temps we were experiencing for the past week. As it turned out, the temps were reasonable (I’m guessing in the upper 30’s), but the snowpack and slight winds made for a chilly morning. This was a late morning event, and it actually started to feel comfortable after noon (and after the kids filled their bellies with the “Caveman Lunch”).

In the Shoot the Meteor activity, slingshot ammunition was dried beans, and the targets were aluminum pie tins and some paper mache’d balloons.

There was a Prehistoric theme to the day’s activities which included Caveman Cooking, Shoot the Meteor, Dinosaur Racing, and Surviving the Ice Age (among others). Rhianna’s favorite activity was Shoot the Meteor. This was a slingshot activity using dried beans as ammunition and aluminum pie tins and paper mache’d balloons as targets. She was able to hit several of the targets! YAY!

Dinosaur Racing — with a giant snowball in the sled for ballast
Bundled up and braving the elements 🙂

James loved the slingshot activity best, too. He also did great at Save the Jurassic World, where you had to toss a tennis ball at a target several yards away. There was one hole in the target board, and James was one of only eleven kids to get the ball through the hole! Also YAY!

The kids also enjoyed Dinosaur Racing, where they raced against each other while pulling along a little plastic toboggan. The toboggans held a giant snowball as ballast. Surviving the Ice Age was an informative station where they learned safety tips for hiking in the wintertime. Finally, they waited in line for the Caveman Cooking station. They got a “sweet” reward of fried dough dipped in their choice of powdered or cinnamon sugar. Yummy.

The Caveman Cooking station rewarded the kids with a sweet treat of sugared fried dough.

So, it can be said — a good time was had by all. Even though it took some time for my kiddos to get their groove on!
