It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! {and handmade Pillowcases to celebrate Halloween}

I have always loved the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Shultz. As a youngster, I used to read about the Peanuts Gang in the Sunday newspaper “funnies.” I hoarded several paperback books featuring the Gang and their antics. Even my sister and I would have a few favorite strips memorized and recite them back and forth. The Peanuts characters are funny. They are sensitive. They are idiosyncratic and resilient. They are certainly timeless.

And as I seem to have a penchant for the underdog, Charlie Brown was absolutely one of my favorites!

Linus explains to Sally the importance of a “sincere” pumpkin patch as he awaits a visit from the Great Pumpkin.

One of the many Charlie Brown television specials to air over the last half century is It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.  Charlie Brown is excited to be invited to his first ever party, Violet’s Halloween party. Before the party, the Peanuts Gang plan to go trick-or-treating, with Snoopy, who is dressed as the WWI flying ace (and who takes his Halloween persona to an extreme). Linus, however, won’t be joining them for trick-or-treating or the party.  He will be waiting in his local pumpkin patch for the arrival of the Great Pumpkin. Linus believes that the Great Pumpkin rises out of the most sincere pumpkin patch – none more sincere than his own local one. He then flies into the air, and delivers presents to all the boys and girls around the world. Because of his belief, Linus is the laughing stock among his friends. Sally is torn between going trick-or-treating for the first time and attending Violet’s sure fire fun Halloween party, or following her love Linus and waiting for the Great Pumpkin’s arrival with him. This special was originally broadcast on CBS in 1966, and it is certainly a must-see this month. This year, ABC will be broadcasting the show on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 8:00 (Eastern/Pacific time). Mark your calendars, friends!
